We rode this route after long periods of rain and as a result it was a slog from start to finish! The part of the route from Langdale over to Lilla Cross was heavy going with the clay sticking to the wheels making life very hard. It was very difficult to find the path near Fylingdales - I think we found it by luck rather than judgement! And of course it wasn't fast singletrack. It was more like one deep bog after another, littered with hidden rocks. By the time we got to Goathland, it felt like we'd done a marathon! More of the same across the moors towards Levisham. Eventually we got into the forest and the route began to get better. Nice downhill section to Levisham station. The route back to Birch Hall was fairly straight forward. We decided to do the nice downhill section from Crosscliff which put a smile on our faces after a torrid day! A soul destroying route if you do it in the wet!

Yesterday, 16 March 08, 4 of us attempted to ride this route but did not succeed. The mud was so heavy it caused 2 major chain and gear related failures with my XT gears having to be dismantled and my bike reverting to a single speed and another chain becoming so tangled it had to be split and rebuilt. We cut the ride short after about 15 miles. One of the most bleak and challenging rides I have been on for a while, but we will be returning!
